Adding Window Shutters for Privacy

Windows are an integral part of the home. It serves as an air vent to help circulate air into the house, serving as an outlet for stale air to get out and serving as an inlet for cool air to breeze in for that refreshing feeling. As such, homeowners need to treat their windows as more than just a hole in the wall.

Windows are actually pretty easy to decorate. You may add a few curtains for that soft, whimsical look on the interior. They're relatively inexpensive and you can change the curtains depending on your mood. An alternative to curtains, you may also try to use interior blinds. Compared to curtains, they offer more privacy because of the nature of the slats. They also come in many colors and are available in standard window sizes and customized sizes too. They do require some installation so if you don't consider yourself an adept handyman, it's best to leave the work to the professionals.

If weather protection, lighting control and privacy are what you are after, then it's probably best that you use interior or exterior window shutters. Window shutters are basically like blinds except that they're made of sturdier material and are built with frames and affixed with hinges either in the interior or the exterior of your windows (and some even use it on doors). The louvers or panels may be either fixed or movable allows you to control the flow of light through the slats. This also affects the level of privacy that you can have. Open the louvers totally, and more light comes in but you also increase your visibility to other people. The reverse follows that when you decrease the distance between the louvers, you limit the light entering the room and as such, you also diminish your visibility among your neighbors.

When necessary, window shutters (specifically, its panels) may be closed over the windows to completely bar light and prevent other people from seeing into your home. Window shutters also serve to protect your windows when strong winds and rain are predicted. Most window shutters may be used in favor of outdoor blinds as they also offer a strong aesthetic appeal. You will probably notice that most quaint and cozy cafes make use of window shutters not just to protect their windows when they are closed but also to evoke a certain whimsy in people.
